Alignment Probe – Precise alignment analysis according to ASTM E1012

Our Alignment Probe Software helps users quickly and reliably assess the alignment of test equipment according to ASTM E1012.

This standard describes how axially applied forces in testing machines must be evaluated with regard to bending and misalignment to ensure reproducible, standard-compliant mechanical tests.

Using a strain gauge-based alignment sensor (8-channel GSV-8 electronics), the application continuously measures strains in two orthogonal planes. From this data, the software calculates:

  • Axial strain
  • Bending components in both planes
  • Vector bending direction
  • ASTM E1012 alignment classes (Class 1 … Out of Class)

The results are visualized in real time, allowing users to immediately see whether a machine is correctly aligned or needs adjustment. This enables:

  • Fast machine setup
  • Reliable verification before each test
  • Documented quality assurance
  • Prevention of faulty test results

The associated GitHub repository contains the complete source code, sample configuration, and installation instructions for the application.
